さっきまで誰もいなかった古ぼけた神社から、
突然人型の何かが現れたんだからな。
Anybody would be frightened half to death if someone suddenly appeared out of nowhere, especially in a run down old shrine like this.

そう。妾は、この神社に祀られている神様。
この地域一帯の水を司る、いわゆる龍神ってやつだよ。
Indeed. The one standing before you is the water dragon goddess enshrined here. I preside over and control all the water in this region.

ふ～む。もっと腰を抜かして驚くもんだと思ってたが。
さすがこの神社の新しい地主だな。小さい頃から妾の話は聞かされてたってわけか？
Hmm? You don’t seem as scared or as shocked as I imagined. I suppose you are the new keeper of this shrine, after all. Were you taught about me from a young age?

ははっ、まぁね。大抵のことはお見通し。
それよりも。まずは礼をさせてくれないか。
Haha, of course I know what goes on in my shrine. Anyway, allow me to thank you.

何って、お前はこの神社を掃除してくれたんだろう？
善い行いをした者には、神様からの褒美をやらないとな。
ほら…もっとこっちにこい。
“What for”? You’ve poured your blood, sweat and tears into cleaning this shrine, have you not? Those who do good deeds deserve a reward in turn from their goddess. Come on, come here.

掃除をしているお前の姿を見ていると、
どうやら耳の手入れが疎かになっていることに気付いてな。
せっかく綺麗にした神社内に、耳垢の一つでも落とされるとかなわないからね。
I noticed that you were so caught up in keeping the shrine clean that it seems you haven’t paid due attention to your ears. And my, what if some earwax were to dirty the shrine that you had only just cleaned?

だから…龍神様からの、耳かきのご褒美をくれてやるよ。
証拠にほら、ちゃんと耳かき棒も持ってるしな。
早くこっちへ来て、妾の膝の上に頭を置くがいい。
So… your reward from your water dragon goddess is an ear-cleaning. See, I even have an earpick right here. So come here, and rest your head upon my lap.

やはりお前は、人間にしてはかなり清らかな心を持っている。

当然だ。神にできないことなどこの世には存在しないからな。
…というのは冗談だが、まぁこの程度なら、例え神じゃなくても造作もない事だろう。
Well? I believe I’m rather skilled, am I not? It’s only natural. There is nothing that a goddess cannot do, after all… Although, jokes aside, you don’t have to be a goddess to be good at ear-cleaning.


それにしても久しぶりだな。この神社に遊びに来るのは。
だから、何をそんなに驚いているんだ？
妾はずっとここにいるんだから、お前のことを知っていて当然だろう？
耳垢がたまりすぎて、妾の話が聞けていなかったのか？
It’s been quite a long time since you’ve visited the shrine… Why do you seem so surprised? I’ve always been within the shrine, so of course I know everything about you. Are your ears so full of wax that you didn’t even hear me?


本当に大きくなったものだな。人間の成長は本当に早い。

毎日が暇な妾にとって、お前たちが神社の近くでじゃれあう声は、適度な癒しになっていたんだがな。

I’m well aware that you really just happened upon the title of shrine keeper without even realising, as the land was passed into your hands. But to think it would be you, who I watched over as a child? It is almost as if your fate has been decided by the gods… Haha.

子どものころ大雨の時、
ふといつもとは違う帰り道を通った結果、洪水に巻き込まれずに済んだだろ。
そういう第六感や、虫の知らせっていうのは、大抵神の力のおかげなんだよ。
Like that time a heavy storm passed through, and you took a different route in the pouring rain, but that in turn meant you avoided being caught up in a terrible flood. What you humans call “the sixth sense” or “gut feeling” is usually the work of us gods.

それに、一度子どもの姿で、お前の前に現れたこともあるぞ。
夏祭りの時期だったかな？遠方から来た着物姿の娘と、たった一日だけ一緒に遊んだろ？
あれ、実は妾だったんだよ。
ま、神の気まぐれっていうか。たまには、人間の子と一緒に遊びたかったって奴さ。
I’ve even appeared before you once, when you were a child. I believe it was during a summer festival? Do you remember spending the day playing with a kimono clad girl from afar, only to never meet her again? That was me. I suppose it was a whim, really, and I just felt like playing with a child for the day.

神様ってのは、意外と気まぐれなものなのさ。

が、話には順序ってものがあるからな。
Hm? “Why”? Well… why indeed? Gods are fickle beings, driven by their whims, you see… is what I would say, but in all seriousness, I had a reason. But that comes later.

神社が手入れされていたころは、毎日しっかり見えていたが…
お前が掃除してくれたおかげで、またこうして拝めることができた。
You could see it every day back when this shrine was taken care of… But to think I can see it once again, thanks to you cleaning up…

人間にとって、神とは都合のいいものだからな。
必要な時だけ手厚く信仰され、それ以外は忘れ去られる。
実際、妾のような小さな神が消えてしまおうが、人間に影響なんてないからな。
Humans only believe in gods when it is convenient for them, of course. They’re devout when they need us, and then forget about us the second we are no longer of use. And indeed, it’s not as though it would make a difference if a minor goddess like myself disappeared.


信仰を失った神様は、人知れず、寂しく独りで消えていく。
だからこそ、神を大切にする人間に対しては、神は優遇して見護ったりする。
…妾は、妾自身の未来を予想していた。
だからこそ…いずれこの土地を継ぐであろう、お前を選んだんだ。
Gods who have lost all their believers slowly disappear into nothingness, all alone. That’s why we are fiercely protective and watch over the humans that believe in us. I foresaw my own future… and that’s why I chose you, into whose hands this shrine would fall.


はははっ、話が見えてこないのか。
じゃあ聞くが、どうして今日のお前は、この神社を掃除しようと思ったんだ？
気まぐれか？昔遊んでいた場所が寂れていたからか？
…そうだ。つまりその直感的な行動は…
Hahaha, you don’t understand? Allow me to ask, then, why did you come to clean the shrine today? Was it on a whim? Were you feeling nostalgic for your childhood playground? …Indeed. That gut feeling you had, which brought you here…

全部…妾が導いたってことなのさ。

神が存在し続ける方法は、主に2つ。
1つは、人間に信仰を広めてもらうこと。
Gods have, realistically, two options for survival. The first is to have many devout followers, and have your name enshrined across the land.

だがこれは、妾のような小さい神様ではどうしようもできない。
そこで…もう１つの方法が…
神の魂を人に移し、後世にわたって生き続ける方法だ。
But that’s far beyond the reach of a minor goddess like myself, of course. And so, the second option… is for the god to transfer their soul to a human, and live on inside of them.

よし。
こっちの耳も、そろそろ梵天にうつるとしよう。

ははっ、ビックリして声も出ないか。まぁ、無理もない。
妾にとっても、これは苦渋の決断だったからな。

要するに…神と人との交わり、いわゆる婚姻だ。
妾の子を人間の世に生み、神の魂をその子の身に宿すのだ。
Hm? Judging by your expression… you haven’t quite understood? Let me try wording it more simply. The god and the human join together, in what you might call ‘marriage’. They bring a newborn child into the world, and the god’s soul is passed on to the child.

なに、人間と神が交わることは過去に事例もある。
神の世界では特に珍しいことでもない。
Haha, it seems like you’ve finally grasped it. It has happened plenty of times in the past, you know? It is hardly unusual.

…ま、人間にとっては、
神と交わることなど恐れ多いと考えるのが普通だがな。
…Well, I do see how humans might find themselves unworthy to be joined with a god and create a child.

言っておくが、誰でもいいというわけではないぞ。
神にだって、人間の相手を選ぶ権利はある。
I will say that it’s not as though anyone will do. We gods have the right to choose our human partners, for what it’s worth.

…お前は、人間の中では人一倍優しいからな。
導かれたとはいえ、今日の掃除一つとっても、その片鱗はうかがえる。
お前は、妾に選ばれた。神である妾の心を、射止めた人間なんだ。
And you are one of the kindest humans one could find. Even if I did guide you here, you still made the conscious decision to follow my guidance. You chose me, and in turn, accepted me for what I am.
